Catholic Charities ‘Ask-A-Lawyer’ Legal Clinic is July 19

On Saturday, July 19, local residents are invited to come to a free Walk-In Legal Clinic to receive information regarding legal questions. “Ask A-Lawyer” clinic is a cooperative program sponsored by Catholic Charities Archdiocese of San Antonio and the St. Mary’s University School of Law. The program, held quarterly at an area church, provides legal guidance and referral services for low-income community members who satisfy the federal poverty guidelines.
Law student volunteers are available to interview clients about various legal issues. Licensed attorneys are available to the students for consultation about the legal issues presented by the client. Clients are offered legal information and if necessary, referrals to legal aid or to other attorneys who will work on a sliding scale payment system or might take a case pro bono (for free).
The event, which is for everyone is who not currently represented by an attorney, will be held on Saturday, July 19, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the San Fernando Cathedral Hall at 231 West Commerce Street in San Antonio. Services are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.
A variety of legal questions are routinely answered in this forum including family disputes, real property, immigration, bankruptcy, products liability, landlord/tenant issues, employment termination, and wills to name just a few. The purpose and mission of Ask-A-Lawyer is to provide an accessible legal-aid service to individuals who are generally unable to seek the services of private attorneys. Individuals often work long day-time hours and require weekend access to legal providers. Other community members are unable to afford intake or consultation fees of private attorneys and may not qualify for legal-aid programs.
